Most of my clients have no experience in choosing an estate sale company and selecting the wrong company can be costly, both emotionally and financially. The last few years have seen a rapid growth in the number of estate sale companies, but you cannot assume all are experienced or competent. I encourage my clients to look very hard at an Estate Sale operator’s years of real experience in estate sales and allied fields. This is a complex field that requires years of fulltime study and work to make one competent.
I have unparalleled experience, I have been a collector all my life and have spent my entire professional career buying and selling antiques, collectibles, art and personal property and have been a collector of various things since I was a child. I opened an antiques shop in 1987 immediately after completing my second degree. In the next few years I expanded into estate sales and appraisals while continuing to own a gallery and sell at antiques shows. As an appraiser, I worked with Emyl Jenkins Appraisals, eventually owning that firm with a partner and changing the name to Accredited Appraisal Associates. We performed appraisals throughout the country and ran a thriving estate sale business. In 2005, I decided to go on my own and continued as an appraiser, dealer and estate liquidator. For the last several years, I have devoted all my time and energy to estate sales.
These long years of experience in every aspect of antiques and personal property gives me the knowledge of both the marketplace and your possessions to stage and conduct the best sale possible. I will recognize your valuable properties and obscure treasures and give them the market exposure necessary to get the best price. My team and I pay careful attention to current trends and values and know what is in demand and needs to be promoted. The sale will be dignified and orderly, which will help assure good prices and a successful sale. I do not turn sale over to “teams.” I am present from the beginning to end and do all the research and pricing. My clients have my full attention throughout the entire process.
Finally, every sale is fully promoted on Estatesales.net, my extensive distribution list and any local newspapers or resources as necessary. Good quality photos will be posted along with a full listing. My copy is literate and grammatically correct, unfortunately, this is not common today, but it matters.
A FEW COMMENTS ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PROFESSION
· Guaranteed profits: Some companies now charge a minimum fee to conduct a tag sale, typically $2,000 to $2,500. There is no reason to pay a company a guaranteed profit, let them earn it the old-fashioned way by hard work and taking risks. There are many excellent and reputable companies that do not demand an unearned profit up front.
· Franchises: The selling of franchises is a recent innovation and is not necessarily bad, but it can be problematic. A well-known name conveys with a franchise, but knowledge and experience do not. Do not be swayed by a name, be certain the franchisee has the years of solid experience needed to conduct your sale.
· Multiple sales: Many companies now hold two or more sales on the same weekend. Again, this is not necessarily bad but may also be problematic. If a company is holding other sales on the same day as yours, the other sales will be competing with yours for the same buyers and limited dollars. Few companies have sufficient staff and expertise to conduct multiple sales and one client is likely to be slighted.
